Keys to keeping your plastic card safe
Card safety starts with keeping constant control of your cards and your numbers. Here are some simple "do's" and "don'ts" that can help keep the risk of being taken advantage of to a minimum.
Do
- Sign your plastic cards with permanent ink immediately upon receipt.
- Commit your PIN (personal identification number) to memory.
- Carry only the cards you plan to use.
- Store unused cards in a secure locked place.
- Open your billing statements promptly and reconcile your account(s).
- Review all plastic card transactions carefully, and immediately report anything you find unusual, or transactions you don't recognize.
- Inventory all plastic cards and keep a listing separate from where you store your cards, of account numbers, issuers, customer service and lost and stolen phone numbers. If your card is lost or stolen, report it immediately.
- Be very careful with receipts. Always take them with you. Check against your statement when it arrives and then store in a secure place or shred.
- Notify the post office to put a hold on your mail when you're out of town; or arrange for a trusted friend or neighbor to collect it for you.
- Make sure your mail box is secure (locking). Or you may want to consider a P.O. Box. Credit cards, checks and statements are stolen from unsecured mail boxes every day.
- When online, make sure the internet site is secure, know the company you are ordering from and check their privacy policy to ensure they will not share your credit card number with other companies. (Privacy policy should also be checked when ordering an item from a television ad.)
Don't
- Loan your cards to anyone.
- Write your PIN (personal identification number) on the card or keep your PIN in your wallet or purse.
- Leave your purse or wallet in your car whether your car is locked or not.
- Do not write "SEE ID" on the signature line on the back of your credit card, this does not validate the card.
